CHAPTER XXII

Despite how things had gone at the meetings, things didn’t turn out much differently than Gabriella thought they would. Granted, she hadn’t expected to witness a bonding, but these things could happen anywhere and anytime and often did.

Cambria left the meeting with an idea of how they were going to handle the quest she was on. The Fae delegation returned to their Kingdom with King Thilmior’s three sons in tow and a command for them to study the parts of the Ancients’ texts and to discover what they could about the ships in the Ice Lands. They were also instructed to find anything they could about the crossover of their people from the land of their forefathers and report it to the Emperor Lariel. Seladair returned to his home after the last portal closed, and Lariel ordered Gabriella to return to the Valley to finish what she was working on.

“So now what?” King Thilmior asked, as he passed goblets of wine across the table to Lariel.

“We sit back and celebrate the bonding of one of your sons,” Lariel declared, as he took the offered drink and raised it in a toast. “Long life and happiness to the newly Life Mated couple.”

“I am sure they will do their best to make it happen,” King Thilmior agreed with a happy grin. “I must admit, I wish the same thing would happen to my daughter.”

Lariel looked surprised at that declaration. He glanced up at his friend and commented, “I never knew you had a daughter. Strange, I never noticed her. I spend enough time in the Ice Lands that I should have by now.”

“She tends to go her own way,” King Thilmior quickly drummed up an excuse. “She is an only child, one that followed the group you met here earlier. There is another set of boys following her set. The younger group has been spending most of their time searching the most remote parts of the Kingdom to make sure we don’t have any rogue animals roaming loose. Those that frequent our lands are generally extremely dangerous, even to Elves, and we try to keep them under control.”

“You have two sets of quadruplets? That must have been interesting when they were all young enough to be unruly,” Lariel noted with a teasing grin.

“We loved every minute of it,” King Thilmior admitted. “Childhood for an Elf never lasts long enough.”

“I doubt if I have ever met more than three of your offspring together at the same time. Are they all boys except the one?” Lariel asked.

“Believe me when I say one girl is sometimes enough,” King Thilmior answered. “Especially when they are like Deneene. She is the most frustratingly, stubborn, opinionated Female in the Empire.”

“And you love her more than life,” Lariel noted with a grin.

“Yes, despite everything, she is the most loving, caring Elf you could hope to meet. She is also every bit as beautiful as her mother, the scamp. She terrorizes her brothers, but they would kill the first person to try harm a hair on her head,” King Thilmior sighed.
